Founded in 2018 by retired U.S. Army Colonel Joe Ricker, At Ease Orchard is a nonprofit farm in Hancock County, Indiana, dedicated to supporting veterans through hands-on experiences in farming and beekeeping. After a 30-year military career—including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan—Joe returned to central Indiana and launched the orchard as a way to give back to fellow veterans transitioning to civilian life.
A Mission Grounded in Service
Joe’s vision for At Ease Orchard is rooted in his commitment to serve. By creating a place where veterans can reconnect, gain new skills, and find meaning after military service, the organization fosters a unique blend of purpose and peer support. Over 230 apple trees—both dwarf and semi-dwarf—have been planted, creating a thriving ecosystem that mirrors the growth of the community it serves.
Beekeeping and the Power of Connection
An apiary was added soon after the orchard’s founding, expanding the farm’s mission to include beekeeping education and training. Joe partners with veteran-focused programs like Heroes to Hives and collaborates with organizations such as the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the National AgrAbility Project. These efforts equip veterans with the tools and knowledge to start their own honey ventures and explore beekeeping as a path to healing and income.
Veteran-Led. Veteran-Focused.
At Ease Orchard is designed with veterans in mind. Joe understands the challenges many face during the transition home—especially the need for connection, shared experience, and purpose. Farming and beekeeping offer therapeutic benefits, helping reduce isolation and providing a space where veterans can relate to one another in a meaningful way.
Growing Reach and Expanding Programs
What began on a small farm near Wilkinson, Indiana, has grown into a national resource. At Ease Orchard now offers in-person and online learning opportunities for veterans across the country. A growing staff and an engaged Board of Directors help guide the organization's strategic vision and ongoing development.
The Meaning Behind the Name
"At Ease" is a familiar command to service members—signaling a time to stand down and take a breath. The orchard lives up to that name, offering veterans a place to reset, learn new skills, and move forward with renewed purpose.
